According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 50 million people in the world suffer from epileptic seizures. These include children as well. At the same time, 80% of the cases of this disease are found in low and middle income countries.

Talking about India, here Epilepsy is one of the top 3 neurological disorders. Childhood abstinence epilepsy is common in young children. This is childhood epilepsy syndrome. We spoke to Dr. Anand Iyer, Consultant Pediatric Neurologist at Apollo Hospital Ahmedabad, to understand when and how children get seizures in this condition.

Question: What is Childhood Absence Epilepsy?

Answer: Childhood Absence Epilepsy is a condition in which young school going children have repeated epileptic seizures. This is a common disorder in childhood.

Question: At what age do babies get these seizures?

Answer: Absence seizures usually occur in children between the ages of 4 and 7. Most of its victims are girls. Children can be screened for juvenile caesares when they have caesars in their teens.

Question: How can parents recognize seizures in their children?

Answer: A seizure can last from 5 to 15 seconds. It can also happen 30 to 40 times a day. Caesar starts all of a sudden and ends all at once. After this the child behaves as if nothing has happened. The child may also be confused for a while. These seizures do not damage the brains of children.

Question: What is the treatment for Childhood Absence Epilepsy?

Answer: Epilepsy can be controlled with anti-seizure drugs. 7 out of every 10 children’s seizures come under control in this way. Treatment for 2 to 2.6 years is necessary for complete recovery from seizures.

Question: Can Childhood Absence Epilepsy cause other problems in children?

Answer: Most children suffering from this disorder develop normally. However, in some, this disease can hinder reading and writing. Also, they may have trouble focusing. His personality can also be hyperactive.
